Held under the high patronage of President Félix Tshisekedi, the First National Roundtable on the Fight Against Women's Cancers was inaugurated in Kinshasa on October 25, 2025, by the Prime Minister of the DRC, Judith Suminwa Tuluka. This historic event brought together the government, technical and financial partners, and civil society around a clear objective: to make women's health a national priority.

A major political orientation

“We are not simply gathered here to open a technical meeting, but to affirm a major political direction: that of a state that chooses to defend life and protect women,” declared the head of government. This roundtable aims to mobilize all stakeholders to strengthen the fight against women’s cancers, particularly breast and cervical cancer, which remain far too prevalent in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Worrying figures

According to the National Cancer Center, the DRC records nearly 15,000 new cases of breast and cervical cancer each year, or two new diagnoses every hour. This reality makes prevention, early detection, and access to treatment all the more urgent.

Progress and government initiatives

The Minister of Public Health, Hygiene and Prevention, Roger Kamba, highlighted the progress made since 2020:

He also announced the upcoming introduction of vaccination against human papillomavirus (HPV) starting in 2026, in line with the global strategy to eliminate cervical cancer by 2030. Despite this progress, several challenges remain: the lack of a national cancer registry, inequalities in access to care between provinces, and the high cost of treatments. The minister advocated for the decentralization of oncology services and a stronger integration of cancer control into Universal Health Coverage.

Kinshasa Declaration and National Mobilization

The work of the Round Table is expected to lead to the adoption of the Kinshasa Declaration, a framework document defining national priorities and monitoring mechanisms. In parallel, the government has established the “Godmother of Roses” award, intended to honor women who distinguish themselves in the fight against cancer. “Protecting women’s health means protecting the future of the nation,” Minister Roger Kamba emphasized, stressing the importance of a collective commitment to meet this major public health challenge.

DENISE NYAKERU TSHISEKEDI CROWNED ROSE GODMOTHER 2025–2026

The fight against women's cancers in the DRC has reached a symbolic milestone. At this first national roundtable, the First Lady, Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi, was officially named Rose Patron for 2025–2026. This distinction underscores her unwavering commitment to the health of women and children, particularly through the work of the LONA Foundation: prevention, awareness, and solidarity are at the heart of its approach.

A powerful symbol in the fight against women's cancers

The title of Rose Godmother goes beyond mere protocol. It recognizes an ambassador for women's rights, a symbol of resilience, and a voice of hope. "Being Rose Godmother means encouraging every woman to no longer be afraid to seek medical advice, to speak out, to get tested, and to believe in life," emphasized one participant during the ceremony.

The roundtable brought together government authorities, healthcare professionals, NGOs, and international partners. Minister Roger Kamba emphasized: “The fight against cancer goes beyond the medical field. It is a collective battle that requires everyone’s responsibility.” Discussions highlighted the need to strengthen prevention, promote early detection, and improve patient care, particularly in rural areas. These areas now constitute the strategic priorities of the ministry and its partners.

Inspiring female leadership

Under the leadership of the First Lady, the LONA Foundation has conducted several awareness campaigns in the provinces, supported the training of medical personnel, and facilitated access to free screening for thousands of women. "This award recognizes female leadership that transforms awareness into sustainable action," commented a member of the organizing committee.

Transforming fear into courage

By becoming the 2025–2026 Pink Ribbon Godmother, Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi embodies hope, strength, and national solidarity in the face of women's cancers. Her message is clear: to mobilize every citizen, every community, every institution around women's health, to transform fear into courage, silence into speech, and awareness into concrete action.
