GILDAS VIEIRA, THE MAN WHO BUILD BRIDGES BETWEEN FRANCE AND AFRICA
A doctor of public health,
researcher, teacher, and international lecturer, Gildas Vieira dedicates his
life to health promotion, social innovation, and intercontinental dialogue. Of
Franco-Congolese heritage, he embodies a new generation of committed
individuals, both rooted in their local communities and resolutely focused on
the future.
A committed path in service of the
common good
Elected deputy mayor of Blois, as
well as a municipal and community councillor for over twelve years, Gildas
Vieira is intimately familiar with the realities on the ground and the
challenges of local public service. A former candidate in the French presidential
election, he was among the first candidates of sub-Saharan origin to run in
that election—a powerful symbolic act, demonstrating his commitment to a more
inclusive and representative society.
A key player in public health
For more than thirteen years,
Gildas Vieira has directed leading public and community health organizations:
the Renaudot Institute and FRAPS (Regional Federation of Actors in Health
PromotionUnder his leadership, these organizations work to reduce social
inequalities in health, to promote prevention, and to develop participatory and
intercultural approaches. "Public
health," he explains, "is
not just about providing treatment; it's also about giving everyone the means
to live with dignity and in good health."
A gateway between continents
Drawing on his experience and
roots, Gildas Vieira is actively involved in the development of the African
continent. He heads the think tankKama Africa Vision (KAV)As president
of this organization, he mobilizes a broad network of partners in France, the
diaspora, and Africa, all working towards a common goal: contributing to the
emergence of a responsible, united, and prosperous Africa. The network supports
the creation of associations, assists local businesses, and initiates
solidarity and humanitarian projects.
In 2024, he published an essay
entitled“Kama Africa Vision – The awakening of a continent”a true
manifesto for a strong, confident and bold Africa.
Diaspora and health: a still
fragile return
Convinced that the African diaspora
represents an immense asset for the continent's development, Gildas Vieira
advocates for better integration of the skills and expertise within this
diaspora. "Many doctors,
researchers, and engineers from the diaspora want to return and share their
knowledge. But economic and administrative conditions don't always allow it,"
he laments. According to him, the solution lies in the creation of a National
Public Health Agency, capable of integrating local expertise with that of the
diaspora, in order to strengthen the coordination and effectiveness of African
health policies.
A citizen committed to the future
Meanwhile, Gildas Vieira is
preparing for the upcoming municipal elections in Blois, leading the citizens'
movement "La France Autrement" (LaFRA), which he has chaired for
about ten years. A non-partisan movement, LaFRA advocates a participatory,
ecological, and solidarity-based approach to public life. "My commitment is simple: to change things to
offer a better life to future generations—in France as well as in Africa."
And he concluded with a quote he
particularly likes: "Reality is
narrow, possibility is immense ."
