THE CONGOLESE FOUNDATION FOR MEDICAL RESEARCH JOIN THE GABRIEL INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC NETWORK
The Congolese Foundation for Medical Research (FCRM), based in
Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, has reached a major milestone in its scientific
and health-related influence. It has joined the GABRIEL network, an international
scientific network created in 2008 by the Mérieux Foundation, becoming its 22nd
member.
This integration will allow the FCRM to participate in collaborative research projects addressing crucial public health issues: tuberculosis, acute respiratory infections, antimicrobial resistance, and other emerging infectious diseases. It also strengthens its role in supporting policy makers and healthcare institutions across the country, while consolidating its scientific and technical capacities.
A STRATEGIC INSTITUTION FOR THERESEARCH MEDICAL IN THE REPUBLIC OF CONGO
Established in 2008, the FCRM is an independent non-governmental organization founded to develop local skills in scientific research. It collaborates closely with the Ministry of Public Health, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and Marien Ngouabi University.
Its activities rely on three major infrastructures:
1. The Christophe Mérieux Center for Research on Infectious Diseases
Equipped with molecular biology, immunology, parasitology laboratories and a 3D printing laboratory, it constitutes the scientific heart of the institution.
2. The “Le Havre” healthcare facility
It includes: a consultation center, a clinical research center dedicated to therapeutic and vaccine trials, and a medical analysis laboratory. This recently built facility offers a modern, secure, and comfortable environment, with professional service provided by highly qualified staff.
3. The administrative and financial unit
It ensures good governance, operational management and financial monitoring of the Foundation.
AMBITIOUS RESEARCH PROGRAMS
Governance is based on a Board of Directors, the decision-making body led by the founders. The CEO, appointed by the Board, oversees day-to-day operations with an operational team. Financial statements are subject to an independent audit annually, ensuring transparency.
The objectives of theFCRM are as follows:
1. Conduct research on priority infectious diseases for public health in Congo-Brazzaville;
2. Train students andhealthcare personnel;
3. Advocate for increased support for health research;
4. To provide quality care to a vulnerable population.
The groups ofEstablished research includes:
Ø GRIEMIP : Research group in immunology and molecular epidemiology of parasitic infections;
Ø Genomics and Resistance
Ø Antimicrobial against Bacteria and Viruses;
Ø GERMESSCA :Research and study group in medicine, social sciences and culture in Africa.
Scientific activitiesinclude, in particular:
· The molecular epidemiology of infectious diseases (malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, chikungunya, COVID-19…);
· Immunological responses to pathogens and vaccination;
· The study of viral, parasitic and bacterial co-infections.
