LABORATORY RODOLPHE MERIEUX RUBBER: A SCIENTIFIC SENTINEL FACING THE EPIDEMICS IN DRC
In Goma, the capital of North Kivu, a new kind of facility stands
discreetly but powerfully: the Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory, one of the most
secure and modern scientific hubs in Central Africa. Owned by the National
Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB), this high-security laboratory,
equipped with P2 and P3 units, is a crucial link in the fight against
infectious diseases with epidemic potential.
A BASTION OF BIOSECURITY IN THE HEART OF AFRICA'S GREAT LAKES
REGION
International cooperation in global
health service
The Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory in Goma
is the result of exemplary cooperation between several partners: USAID, the
Mérieux Foundation, the Mérieux Foundation USA, and the INRB. Inaugurated
following the devastating Ebola epidemic of 2018–2021, it symbolizes the global
mobilization to strengthen decentralized diagnostic capacities in the
Democratic Republic of Congo.
In 2019, when the first cases of Ebola
appeared in Goma, Professor Jean-Jacques Muyembe Tamfum, director of the INRB
and an emblematic figure in African virology, alerted the Mérieux Foundation to
the urgent need to increase local diagnostic capacities.
A few months later, the Foundation
airlifted robust, self-contained, and resource-limited-resource container
laboratories designed by the Grenoble-based company IMeBIO. The project then
took shape thanks to co-financing from USAID and the Mérieux Foundation USA,
giving rise to this unique reference center for the Great Lakes region.
A strategic position in thefight
against epidemics
The Democratic Republic of Congo is one
of the few African countries to possess a network of internationally recognized
reference laboratories for emerging diseases and viral hemorrhagic fevers.
Until now concentrated in Kinshasa, the expertise of the INRB was to be
extended to the east of the country, a particularly vulnerable area where more
than a quarter of the Ebola epidemics of the last 40 years have been recorded.
The Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory in Goma
addresses this strategic need. It provides:
• Monitoring of viral hemorrhagic fevers
(Ebola, Marburg, etc.),
• Secure storage of samples from
epidemics,
• And the operational coordination of
rapid interventions in the event of an epidemic outbreak.
“Goma is a vital crossroads between the
DRC, Rwanda and Uganda. This laboratory acts as a scientific barrier against
the cross-border spread of viruses,” emphasizes Dr. Daniel Mukadi, Director of
the Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory and the provincial branch of the INRB in Goma.
State-of-the-art equipmentserving
biosecurity
The complex includes:
• A P2 laboratory, dedicated to
molecular diagnostic analyses and equipped with level 2 biological safety
cabinets.
• A P3 laboratory, allowing the handling
of highly infectious pathogens, equipped with state-of-the-art decontamination
and sterilization systems.
• A refrigerated container for storing
sensitive specimens and reagents.
• Modern offices and workspaces for
researchers and teams on assignment.
A dozen highly qualified scientists and technicians work there
daily, ensuring continuous scientific monitoring and a rapid response to health
emergencies.
A key player during theCOVID-19
pandemic
The year 2020 tested the resilience of
the global health system. Faced with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Rodolphe
Mérieux Laboratory established itself as a regional diagnostic center for
eastern DRC. In just a few months, it performed more than 7,000 PCR tests,
making a decisive contribution to the surveillance and management of the
pandemic in the Great Lakes region.
Formation, biosecurity and excellence
Thanks to the partnership with the
Mérieux Foundation, staff received specialized training on equipment use,
biosecurity, biosafety, and biological waste management. Standard operating
procedures (SOPs) were developed to ensure optimal operation, in strict
compliance with international standards. This training strengthens local
capacity and contributes to the development of a new generation of Congolese
scientists, capable of addressing future infectious threats.
Perspectives : an
expanding scientific network
As a member of the GABRIEL Network, an
international consortium dedicated to sharing knowledge in infectious health,
the Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory in Goma is gradually integrating into a global
surveillance and research ecosystem. Ultimately, it will become a regional
reference laboratory for viral hemorrhagic fevers and emerging diseases,
contributing to better preparedness and response to future epidemics.
The Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory in Goma
embodies a scientific and human success story in service of global health. Born
from a shared vision between the DRC and its international partners, it
testifies to a new balance between cooperation, autonomy, and African
innovation. In a region marked by health crises, it symbolizes the promise of a
future where science becomes the first line of defense against epidemics.
